Faithful followers, the blog is not on hiatus, it is just taking a short vacation. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of a Coastal Prickly Pear (Opuntia Littoralis), taken at Cabrillo National Monument.
Yes, there is a bee in there. Coastal Prickly Pears are endemic to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of southern California and Baja California. Despite being next to the ocean and thus having lovely temperatures that rarely move below 60 or above 70, coastal sage scrub is remarkably well drained and thus supports both cacti and lusher plants like manzanitas and pines.
